The Leake's Week-July 16, 2023

 Hello!

Summer is slipping through our fingers.  July is more than halfway done and and the kids go back to school one month from tomorrow.  I will admit that at this current time, this makes me more sad than happy!  August 17th is way too early to go back to school in my opinion.  Wah, wah, wah.  But, we will keep making the most of it, which clearly, we have been doing because I am once again two weeks behind in writing.  I am going to work backwards, so here are our highlights from this last week.

*Richard has actually been around!  When we got back from our trip to Island Park in June, he worked 12 straight days, had two days off, and then worked another stretch of 12 days.  It was intense and exhausting for everyone, but especially him.  This last week he had Saturday-Wednesday off, worked Thursday, and then only worked 12:00 pm-5:00 pm on Friday.  It was AMAZING.  We all loved having him home, available, and so present with us.  So three cheers for a breather from work!  He was able to take Marshall up to his soccer scrimmage in Clearfield on Monday evening, which proved to be an intense game, but Marshall's team came out with the win.  On Tuesday he took Gretchen on her summer date.  They had a great time going to Hug-Hes for lunch (Gretchen LOVES their bread) and then Target so she could pick out a new backpack for school.  (Yes, we are already doing school shopping and I like it and hate it at the same time!)  Weeks ago, we bought a foosball table to put in the loft after my massive loft purge the end of May.  It has been sitting in a box in the garage for weeks, and on Tuesday evening Richard and Marshall put it together.  Marshall was actually incredibly helpful-yay!  We have been spending lots of time playing foosball since then.  In true Marshall fashion, he has looked up the official rules of the game and holds us all to it.  Marshall and I have played multiple times together and even though I have been leading at times, he always wins in the end...until last night!  I scored 7 times on him before he scored his first point and then I went onto win 10-1!  Victory!  I could not believe it...hence I am writing about it...preserved for posterity forever!  Marshall has also had a couple of friends over this week and has had fun playing foosball with them.  Friday evening, when Richard was done with work, we went on a double date with our friends, Kara and Dan Sonntag.  We had a great evening with them and went up to Ogden for some great burgers at Warrens Craft Burger and then we went to Farr's for ice cream.  Such a fun night.

*Bridget and her best life.  Bridget has had a phenomenal week.  On Monday and Tuesday morning she helped at "Horse Camp".  The place she does riding lessons at is doing summer camps for young kids and her teacher is using the older kids she teaches as junior counselors.  Bridget was able to help for two mornings this week and loved it.  The camps are from 9:00-12:00, so it is a good chunk of time.  Monday night and Saturday night she worked at the farm with Cambria.  And those two girls talked me into a late night at our house Monday after the farm.  They are little besties, that is for sure.  Wednesday morning Bridget left for Girl's Camp!  She was beyond excited.  We helped her get all packed on Monday and Tuesday.  I asked her Tuesday night if she was nervous at all (I was terrified for my first Girl's Camp, though I did not tell her this!) and she quickly answered that she wasn't nervous at all, just so excited, and that totally showed.  We dropped all her gear off Tuesday evening and then I took her to our YW President's house to help assemble tin foil dinners and then they watched a movie.  A fun little camp kick-off for them!  They were to meet at the church at 9:00 am Wednesday morning, but she was ready to go by 8:00.  She had packed her lunch, filled up her water bottle, and had put an old pillowcase on her pillow.  :)  I told her that I would be walking her to the church to say good-bye and she looked at me like I was crazy!  Much to her dismay, her sisters walked with us as well.  It's not that she didn't want us there, we just slowed her down a bit!  She was so ready.  When we got to the church we hugged her good-bye and I told her about a million times to put on sunscreen and then Rachel, Grizz, and I walked home.  We picked her up at noon at the church yesterday and this might sound cheesy, but it gave me a small taste of what it might be like to pick up a missionary coming home.  To be in a more public setting, with the church parking lot full of parents eagerly waiting for their girls to come home, and then cars pulling into the parking lot every few minutes loaded up with young women, but now knowing which car your child is in!  Ah, it got me a bit emotional!  We were so happy to see her finally get out of a car, in one piece, looking filthy and happy and carrying a huge bag of popcorn!  Ha!  Richard, Gretchen, Rachel and I were all there to pick her up and we were so happy to have her back.  We spent some time at the church while all the girls worked to unload their gear.  It was fun to see them working so well together and just by the looks of it, it sounds like they all had a great week.  We have only heard some highlights from Bridget, but I know she will tell us more.  Their first day they spent at a reservoir and she kayaked and swam and had so much fun.  She was in a tent with two other girls and she had so much fun with them.  They spent an afternoon doing archery and she loved that and wants to try it on a horse one day.  They made bracelets, hiked to a mine, learned all the silly camp songs, helped with meal prep and clean up (which she and her friends loved doing), and did an iron rod activity.  She got thoughtful little gifts from her secret sister and also loved giving and surprising her secret sister.  I would count it as a definite win and she was asleep on the couch by 3:00 pm yesterday afternoon.

*Swimming and tumbling for Rachel and Gretchen.  These two girls had a week of swim lessons this last week.  They both have teachers they had last year and are loving it.  Rachel is terrified of treading water in the deep end, but she slowly added on time each day.  She spent a lot of time working on dives and now she has a successful dive more than she does a belly flop!  Gretchen, per the usual, is squishy and darling in her goggles and remains decently brave but also uncoordinated.  She is hilarious to watch.  When she runs and dances she looks pretty coordinated, but with swim lessons last year and this year, I am reminded that she was severely behind with gross motor skills as a baby and it seems to manifest in the pool.  It is honestly completely endearing to me, and her teacher is so patient with her and I know one day she will get it down.  When she is just focusing on her kicks or her arms for the front crawl, and stationary, she totally gets it, but as soon as the teacher moves her around or asks her to combine the arms and legs, it all goes crazy and it cracks me up.  I just love her.  Anyway, that has been fun to watch this last week.  Also this week Rachel and Gretchen started a summer tumbling class at Project Move.  It is just once a week for three weeks, so it is quick, but they loved being in class together and I am so grateful they get to do it.  Rachel will keep doing tumbling in the fall and Gretchen is on the wait-list (fingers crossed), but they will not be in the same class anyway.  So, fun week for them doing so much together!

*Cross country.  Marshall isn't ready to admit it, but I think he is really starting to love cross country.  This was the first week he was able to be at every single practice, and they practice Monday-Saturday at 6:30 am, so that is some dedication!  He ran over 26 miles this week, and was happy to inform us about that stat yesterday.  :)  We are proud of him!

*Rachel's summer date.  Even though Rachel and I pretty much had seven straight days of a date in San Diego, she and I went out for our annual summer date on Friday afternoon.  In San Diego, I introduced her to the Old Spaghetti Factory and she loved it, so she wanted to go to the one here in Trolley Square.  We had a fun lunch together and then went to Target to pick out her backpack for the upcoming school year.  She was so fun to be with.  She asked me so many questions and had the silliest comments for things.  It was a delightful afternoon with her!

Okay, San Diego!  I think I am going to break this week into three parts.  First part...DANCE!

*Rachel had a dance rehearsal Sunday evening, competition for two dances and awards Monday morning/afternoon, master classes Tuesday afternoon, a rehearsal Wednesday evening, and competition and awards for her last routine Thursday evening.  So dance, of some sort, every day for five days straight and she loved it.  All three of her routines scored in the diamond category, which is the highest category point-wise to be in.  Walk the Line and One Shoe Blues were scored in a category of over 30 dances and they only announced the top 10 scores and those two dances took 7th and 8th!  I was so proud of those little dancers for scoring so high and placing so well!  At the awards on Thursday night they said that to that point the judges had seen over 1400 dances!  Sheesh!  And there was still one full day left.  My goodness.  We stayed at the hotel where the competition was, so there were literally dancers everywhere, from all over the western United States.  It was neat to see such a wide variety of dance and costumes and ethnicities and accents, even though we were just in California.  Overall, it was a really great experience and I am so glad Rachel had this opportunity.  I hope she gets to repeat it in two years!

*San Diego in general.  Even though Rache. had a lot of dance going on, we still got to do some other really cool things.  I had not been to San Diego since 2004, so it had been a long time, and we both basically fell in love with the city.  We didn't rent a car, so with the exception of getting to and from the airport and Sea World, we walked everywhere.  I was reminded that San Diego weather cannot be beat.  My goodness, we were in heaven with temperatures in the low to mid 70s and almost a constant cool breeze coming off the water.  Everywhere we walked was clean, well kept, and we felt safe and if it weren't for the cost of living, we could both totally move there.  :)  Our hotel was right next to Seaport Village, a darling little area right on the water with great restaurants and shops.  We spent Monday afternoon there shopping, walking around and eating, it was delightful.  Tuesday night was the 4th of July and we met up with Sara's family there to watch the fireworks.  We were able to see three separate firework shows and it was so fun and also hard to know where to look because there were always fireworks exploding in the sky, it was quite the night!  We went back to Seaport on Wednesday afternoon with most of her team to get an ice cream treat after the awards extravaganza.  I got a delicious dole whip and Rachel got a churro sundae, which she is still talking about.  It was such a fun little area.  On the afternoon of the 4th we had a team lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, which was both fun and delicious.  After that, Rachel and I met up with Sara's family again and toured the USS Midway.  Lunch took quite a while and the girls had master classes to get back for, so we were only on the ship for one hour, and we easily could have spent three hours, so we had to rush it, but it was remarkable.  So incredible and a really fun place to be on Indepence Day!  I told Richard and Marshall the USS Midway is a must see!  Wednesday morning Rachel slept until 10:30 am, so we scrapped any sort of adventure for the day and walked to a great restaurant for a very late brunch.  Richard Walker's Pancake House was our best find on this trip and it was amazing.  Thursday we tried a different restaurant for breakfast, also very good, and then we went to go see Six with two of Rachel's teammates and their moms.  Six happened to be in San Diego for two weeks on tour and I could not believe it when I looked at tickets for a Thursday matinee on a Monday and there were so many open seats!  We scored two seats right by one of Rachel's dance friends.  I knew the storyline of Six, but we had not listened to a single song.  Rachel and I loved it, and suffice it to say, Rachel and Gretchen are now listening to the soundtrack on repeat at home.  :)  Friday was our last day there and the only day we didn't have a dance schedule to work around so Rachel and I decided to visit Sea World!  We had so much fun!  We were there from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm and had a great time.  We saw the dolphin, orca and sea lion shows and had a blast.  I insisted we get there 30 minutes early for each show because I wanted good seats!  We sat in the soak zone for each one.  We got a tiny bit wet with the dolphins, not wet at all with the sea lions, and completely soaked with the orcas.  My word, those are HUGE animals and their splash packs quite a punch.  We smelled so great afterward!  Ha!  But we both loved it.  We also saw sting rays, sharks, flamingoes, and stood in a way too long line for a ride equivalent to Rattlesnake Rapids at Lagoon.  Rachel was beat by the time we were done with that ride, and the sun was starting to set, so we called it a day and took a Lyft back to the hotel.  Rachel was exhausted and fell asleep before 8:30 that night and slept until 8:30 the next morning!  She had had quite a week!  Despite doing all of that, we did have a lot of downtime at the hotel.  Rachel is a girl who likes and needs downtime, so even though I desperately missed our family, for that single reason I am glad it could just be the two of us on that trip.  She called the shots and had plenty of time to rest and recharge.  She found a show on Netflix and made it through almost every episode that week!  Ha!  I also liked it too, so it was a win-win!  She and I played a lot of games and just genuinely enjoyed being together.  I caught up on much needed sleep, read an entire book, and got caught up on some projects, so I also loved the downtime!  It was a fun and memorable week for the two of us!

*At home.  Despite Richard working every day I was gone, the kids survived and still had an excellent week.  My parents picked them up Sunday afternoon and they spent the rest of the day playing games and eating dinner before they brought them back home.  Marshall played with Johnny on Monday and Melanie came and picked up Bridget and Gretchen at 11:00 that morning.  She fed them lunch, took them swimming at their neighbor's pool, did Bridget's hair in a cool wrapped braid, covered the farm with Bridget and Cambria, fed everyone dinner and brought them home at 10:00 pm!  Winner of a day for sure for my girls.  My parents picked them up the next morning for Centereville's first 4th of July parade in three years!  I have actually heard mixed reviews on the parade, but I think they still had fun.  Later that afternoon they went back to my parents' house for a BBQ and cousin time.  That was a highlight for sure.  They played fun games and got to meet brand new cousin, Miles, and just had the best time.  My Mom was so kind to come pick them up the next morning again and drive them to Heber where they met Grandpa Bob at Dairy Keen before driving the rest of the way to Vernal.  The kids had a great time in Veranl.  Obviously, Bridget was in heaven.  Marshall spent quite a bit of time on horses himself!  They played fun games, went to the rodeo, which Marshall found most impressive, watched movies and just enjoyed time with grandparents.  And Ziggy survived his first encounter with Sassy the cat...who proved to be just that...sassy!  We were all reunited at the airport about 4:30 pm last Saturday and we were so happy to be back together!

So there you have it folks.  Summer is alive and well in the Leake household.  We have this week home together and then Marshall will be at some camp or another for the next three weeks with days at home only here and there.  That will be odd!  Here's hoping it gives him a little bump up in his maturity level.  :)

We love each of you!

Love,

Richard, Jenny, Marshall, Bridget, Rachel, and Gretchen :)

The Leake's Week-July 2, 2023

 Hello!

I am writing this email while in the Salt Lake Airport and at a hotel in San Diego!  It has been a day!  The time for dance nationals has finally arrived and Rachel and I are here for it!  We snuggled everyone this morning and gave lots of hugs and kisses and promises to text, call and FaceTime.  Richard took us to the airport at 9:00 am and then went home to work.  Lame.  Poor guy is in another 12 day stretch of work and we cannot wait for him to finally have some time off this coming weekend and into next week.  Marshall, Bridget, and Gretchen will be at home through Tuesday with the help of my parents, neighbors and friends, each other and Richard.  On Wednesday my Mom is meeting Grandpa Bob in Heber with the kids (and the dog!) and he will take them back to Vernal for the rest of the week.  Richard will drive to Vernal Friday after work and then they will all drive home Saturday afternoon and pick us up at the airport!  Can you tell I am already missing them?!?!  It will be a good week here, but my heart is always a little sad when we are split up!  Anyway, here is a recap of our last week…it was good, but busy and exhausting and we all went to bed entirely too late every single night.

Marshall started cross country last Monday!  He got up at 5:30 am and our neighbors came to pick him up at 6:15 for 6:30 practice.  He was a good sport about waking up so early and I was proud of him.  If you were to ask him how practice was, he would tell you “Terrible!” but I do think that deep down he has been enjoying it.  Bridget worked at the farm Monday morning, and it took forever due to a variety of things.  I was helping them and Bridget and Cambria just kept pushing on and did a great job.  Rachel had a short rehearsal on Monday afternoon.  That evening Marshall had soccer, Bridget worked at the farm again (bless her!) and I had a dance meeting for Rachel.

Tuesday was a day, but a good day.  My whole day was in the car, out of the car, repeat, repeat, repeat!  I took Marshall to cross country and they ended their workout at the rec center.  Rachel had a longer dance rehearsal, 10:00-1:15 and she also had piano that afternoon.  Bridget, bless that girl, slept until 10:50 am!  My goodness!  By the time she woke up Marshall had gone to practice, mowed the entire lawn, Rachel was at dance, and I had done 100 things.  ðŸ˜Š  To be young, with hardly any responsibility!  Wednesday through Friday was Boot Camp for Rachel at dance.  The teachers planned such fun days for those dancers.  Still plenty of work, but tons of fun mixed in.  They kicked it off Tuesday at the end of rehearsal.  They divided all the girls going to nationals into five groups (platoons) and gave them their names.  Rachel was in the Dorky Dads group and she came home beyond excited.  Each day they had to plan costumes, cheers, skits, etc and almost all of this was coordinated through text and the occasional FaceTime call.  For the next three days I was inundated with texts from pre-teen and teenage girls and it was bananas.  I am certain I got 500 texts in three days.  Ha!  It was hilarious to read their comments and all that slang that I had to decipher!  Anyway, Rachel had to come up with a Dorky Dad costume on Tuesday so between DI, Marshall, Bridget, and Richard’s closets we pulled together a pretty fantastic look for her.  She was LOVING it!  Gretchen spent the entire afternoon at the Howell’s house playing with their girls and had the time of her life.  That evening, I got some calm in my day and met Shannon for dinner at Arella’s.  It was beyond wonderful to sit and visit with her and catch up.  She is a dear friend, and we talk often on Marco Polo, but nothing compares to talking in person!  Richard and Marshall also had a fun night.  They met Ricky and Duncan at a movie theater to see The Flash.  Richard loved it and Marshall thought it was weird.  ðŸ˜Š  When I got home that night, I was over the moon elated to see Bridget and Rachel washing the dinner dishes.  Praise the heavens!!!

Wednesday Rachel was at dance from 9:00-2:45, she came home equally happy and worn out.  After I got Rachel off, the other girls and I, along with Ziggy, drove down to Lehi and met Lara Vanhille and three of her kids at a park.  Our kids haven’t seen each other since August, so it took them a bit to warm up to each other, but they eventually started playing together and had a great time.  Ziggy was amazing.  Absolutely amazing.  We usually had him on his leash, but we could not have pulled off three hours at a park with him before his training.  We did take him off his leash twice and threw toys for him and he loved that and he was so good at coming back when we called him!  Yay!  Lara and I had the best time catching up with each other, even though it was interrupted so many times because of kids, but still so wonderful to see her.  Marshall had a relaxing day at home, but that night he did have soccer evening then went straight to his Teacher’s Quorum activity.  Bridget had horseback riding and Young Women’s.

Thursday was finally a day at home for me and I relished every moment of it.  Rachel, on the other hand, had dance from 9:00-4:00!  The teachers surprised them though and took them swimming at the rec center from 2:00-4:00.  Peer pressure played a positive role in Rachel’s life and she finally tried the yellow slide at the rec center and loved it.  We have been trying to get her to do this for years!   That afternoon, Marshall went running with Spencer Dean, Bridget had Cambria over for a Heartland marathon, and Naomi and Gretchen played all afternoon in the loft.  I think they came down for one snack, watched about 10 minutes of Bluey and then were right back to playing.  Cambria had dinner with us and then I took the girls to the farm to milk.

Friday…let’s see…my brain is failing me.  Rachel had dance from 9:00-1:30. Their boot camp ended at the director’s house with a lunch and awards.  I think it is safe to say Rachel’s first dance boot camp experience was both wonderful and exhausting.  She was beat by Thursday night, but she rallied and pulled off a great Friday.  Bridget and Cambria had a short milking session at the farm Friday afternoon, but other than that, we had a pretty chill afternoon at home.  That evening we all went up to Weber State to cheer on darling Rachel Louise and all the other dancers going to nationals.  Our kids were pretty good sports about sitting through another dance performance.  Everyone did great, and all these girls, including Rachel, are ready to take the stage at nationals…so here we are!  After the recital, we stopped at Chick-Fil-A for shakes, took them home, ate them on the deck and then watched some funny videos before finally going to bed!  It was a great night being together.

Yesterday was a doozy of a day, dare I say.  Richard was working from home, I was trying to pack, do laundry, run errands, and you know, every other thing one tries to accomplish before leaving town.  Our kids were at each other’s throats.  Long day.  One highlight though is my parents did stop by to visit and wish Rachel luck, so it was great seeing them and everyone mostly got along while they were at our house!  Bridget and Cambria had to go to the farm and milk three goats at 2:00 pm and then they were back at 5:00 to do all the evening chores.  They rocked it though and were done by 7:30.  Yay!  We had some time at home as a family for a bit and then we all went to see Centerville’s fireworks together.  It was one impressive show and it was nice to have that time of happiness after such a draining day!  Both Richard and I thought during the fireworks that it would be so fun to take our kids to Stadium of Fire one year…and then the fireworks ended and the arguing started all over again…so I don’t think we will be pursuing that anytime soon!  Ha!

Today has obviously been a travel day for Rachel and me.  She has done awesome and I have gotten a taxi all by myself and checked into a hotel, so I am counting those as huge wins.  ðŸ˜Š  Usually, I just follow behind Richard and he takes care of all of this!  As far as I know, things are good at home!  Rachel competes two of her dances tomorrow morning!  Send good vibes!

Love each of you.

Richard, Jenny, Marshall, Bridget, Rachel and Gretchen ðŸ˜Š

And now that I am looking at pictures to send, I forgot to mention a couple of things.

On Tuesday morning Marshall and I watched a flyover to celebrate 100 years of being able to refuel in the sky. It was cool!

I took the kids to the Centerville Park on Saturday morning for 4th of July festivities.  We did manage to get along great there!

·       In the airport today a lady asked Rachel and I if we have matching glasses.  We don’t, but know that I look at our picture, they look very similar!

The Leake's Week-June 26, 2023

 Happy Monday!

We had a good week.  We all survived Bridget's absence, though we dearly missed her.  She came home yesterday and Ziggy came home on Thursday and last night it felt so great to have everyone home together for family prayer!  Here are the highlights of our week...

Last Monday morning Bridget and I left at 9:00 am, picked up Cambria and made the almost two hour drive to Fruitland.  Becky was there waiting for us and we loaded the girls up in her van, got some treats in the gas station, gave hugs and then went our separate ways.  I got home about 1:30 pm and found all well here at home.  Marshall had soccer practice that evening.

Marshall spent most of Tuesday hanging out with Johnny.  They had dinner at Johnny's house and then rode their bikes to Dicks and bought treats and then came back here to hang out.  Rachel and Gretchen spent the entire afternoon and evening playing with the Howells.  The Howells have lived in our cul-de-sac the entire time we have lived here and they have six kids, though only their son matches up with Bridget in birth year/school year/primary year.  Their youngest three girls are right around Rachel and Gretchen's ages, but they are not the same year in school so friendships have not been immediate...clearly, we have lived here for five years!  Ha!  Slowly, over the course of the school year, the girls started to play together more and this summer it has blossomed into a daily occurrence, which we are all loving!  It is so nice that I don't have to drive anyone anywhere or coordinate pick up/drop off times.  They are living the way we all grew up...knocking on someone's door to see if they can play!  Yay!  Anyway, on Tuesday, Rachel and Gretchen played with the Howell girls for hours.  We finally brought them in for dinner at 7:45 pm.  :)  I had a primary meeting that night, so I left at 8:30 and Richard wrapped up dinner time and bedtime.

Wednesday morning I went on a walk with my Mom, which was lovely as always!  Rachel had dance in the morning and though I don't remember, I am certain the girls played with the Howells again.  After lunch, Marshall went swimming with Johnny at his grandparents' neighborhood pool.  There was not a soul there so they had the place to themselves...lucky boys!  He got home just in time to change and I ran him down to soccer practice.  Richard picked him up from practice 90 minutes later, he was home for 15 minutes, enough time to change clothes and scarf down two pork tacos and then he was off to a combined YM/YW activity.  They tied blankets for Primary Children's and then played lawn games.  Marshall can be a homebody, but when he has days like this where he goes from one thing to the next he handles it well (usually!) and is happier!  If only this was his natural inclination.  :)

Rachel had dance again on Thursday morning.  Marshall went to the temple and did baptisms with some youth in our ward.  He was invited the day before, and I am so glad he said yes.  Thursday morning he could not find his recommend, which is a VERY usual occurrence, but he always finds it within a few minutes, not so Thursday morning!  He and I looked in every possible place we thought it might be, but to no avail.  In a sign of true maturity, he still went to the temple and just had his membership number so they could look up his recommend.  I was beyond proud of him!  He had a great time at the temple, and afterward they went to lunch at Culver's!  As a sidenote, the next morning I found his recommend in the instruction booklet for the watch he just got.  What?!?!  Back to Thursday...after dance Rachel went straight to piano and right after that Gretchen, Rachel and I went to pick up Ziggy!  We had been without him for 22 days, and it was the happiest of reunions!  He went crazy when he saw us.  He ran right to us, jumped up and up and up, gave licks and his little puppy hugs with his front paws and we were so happy.  We spent the next hour talking with the trainers and basically having them train us so we can keep Ziggy's progress going strong.  He learned place, down, wait, heel, come and he is quite good at all of it!  Yay!  Money well spent.  Marshall was waiting for us when we got home and it was another wonderful reunion, boy and dog.  :)  Marshall and I had a chill afternoon at home with Ziggy while Rachel went to Eily's and Gretchen played with the Howells.  When Richard got home that night it was SO fun to watch Ziggy, who was beside himself!  One huge improvement with Ziggy is he is no longer mauling Richard when he is in the kitchen!  Ha!  We tell him "place" and he goes to his dog bed and stays there...a miracle!  That evening, we took a walk and played outside in the amazing weather before I picked up Rachel.  I will say, though we all desperately missed Bridget, we had lots of time where we just had time with two kids at home, because another one was off somewhere.  Those were very fun moments, to just have Marshall and Gretchen or just Rachel and Gretchen-I soaked it all up!

Friday was a day at home for me getting things done.  Johnny came up for the afternoon and had dinner with us.  The girls played with the Howells in the afternoon.  I made dinner and took it to a family in our ward.  All the kids, Marshall and Johnny included, played outside after dinner.  At 8:00 pm, my ministering companion and I took a birthday treat to a neighbor and ended up talking outside for 90 minutes.  It was glorious.  When I came in, we put the girls to bed, Marshall went to Johnny's, he came home at 11:00 pm and we all went to bed entirely too late.  :)

Saturday morning we all slept in...YAY!!!  Rachel helped make breakfast for us, her choice was scones, delicious breakfast!  Rachel had dance that morning and Richard and Marshall went on their summer date-Top Golf.  Marshall went to Top Golf last summer for a birthday party and has been waiting for almost a year to go with Richard.  They had a great time together and I am glad we were finally able to make it happen!  Richard and I went to the temple that afternoon and did sealings.  We had dinner at Kneader's and then picked up Cafe Rio for the kids.  Once everyone had eaten, we played outside, took Ziggy on a walk, and Richard and Marshall watched a soccer game.  It was a good Saturday!

Yesterday was a busy day, especially for a Sunday.  Richard had bishopric meeting at 9:30 and I went to the 10:30 sacrament meeting.  Richard helped the kids finish getting ready for church and I got home just as they were leaving and I was able to give everyone a hug.  I got a few things ready for me to drive to Fruitland to pick up Bridget and Cambria and just as I was loading the car I saw a text from Becky saying that Bridget had just thrown up!  Poor girl!  I threw a bowl and Lysol wipes in the car and hoped for the best!  When I got to Fruitland I was surprised to see a happy, smiling, good-color-in-her-cheeks Bridget, especially because Becky told me she threw up one more time on their drive.  It was a conundrum to me because she did not look how one usually looks with the stomach flu!  She and Cambria talked for the first 15 minutes or so of our drive home, and then Bridget ended up falling asleep and slept all the way home!  After talking to her more, I am chalking her little bouts of feeling not so good up to sleep deprivation and a good long week of FUN.  Once again, we got home just as Richard and the other kids were leaving for Toney FHE.  Bridget was elated to see Ziggy, and he was SO happy to see her.  I am certain he knew she was missing.  It was a sweet reunion.  I got Bridget settled at home, since I still wasn't 100% sure if she was sick or not, and then went to my parents' house.  We had a great Toney FHE and it was so good to visit with everyone, as always, and the kids had a ball playing together.  Richard and Marshall left Toney FHE just after 7:00 to make it to a neighborhood dessert night that was in our cul-de-sac and Bridget, who felt totally normal, also came out to join them.  The younger girls and I stayed another hour at my parents' before saying our good-byes.  Once home, we had a great evening outside with neighbors and stayed out entirely too late.  The kids played and adults talked and we brought Ziggy out for the last hour and he did awesome!  There is no way we could have done that with him four weeks ago.  Yay!

And lastly, a quick report on Bridget and her time in Vernal.  The short story, she was in heaven and continues to wish she lived there.  She and Cambria had the time of their lives and Bob and Becky took great care of them and provided so much fun.  Long story, they rode the horses every single day, sometimes twice.  Bridget rode Fred, using Grandma Yancey's saddle, and Cambria rode Goose.  Bob took them on a trail ride in the Uintas on Wednesday and the pictures looked gorgeous.  They also went bowling, swimming at the rec center, had two sleepovers with Katelin, did baptisms at the Vernal Temple, and started watching "Heartland" and they are hooked!  They played in the yard, laid in the hammock, visited cute little Midnight who is growing more and more used to people, and played games.  They stayed up late, slept in late (most mornings) and just had the best time.  We are happy for her, but are also so glad she is back.  Lunch was a tad chaotic today with all five of us in the kitchen, but I loved hanging back and just listening to all four kids talk and laugh and tease and enjoy being together again.

We have a few days of all of us at home and then Rachel and I leave on Sunday for nationals in San Diego!  I am equal parts excited and stressed out of my mind!  Wish us luck!

Love each of you.

The Leake's Week-June 19, 2023

 Hello!

A Monday edition!  But, I could not let a second week pass me by, so here we are!  Our last week was a good one.  A pretty quintessential summer week, and it was wonderful.  Here are the highlights...

Last Monday morning I went on a walk with two friends in my neighborhood, a great start to the day.  Later that morning, Bridget helped me pack lunches for everyone and we left just after 10:00 am headed for a park in Kaysville.  My Mom arranged a park day for those of us in town and we had the best time together.  Stacie and Audrey were also there with their boys and the weather was AMAZING.  I am loving, I cannot emphasize enough, how much I am loving this cooler June weather!  We played at the park from 10:30-1:30 and we only left because we had to pick up groceries by 2:00 pm.  The kids ran and ran and there is no way they could have lasted that long in 90 degree weather.  All the kids were fairly independent, and my Mom did play with them a ton, but I loved sitting and talking with Stacie and Audrey.  My Mom really was a fantastic grandma on Monday, as she always is, but she soared to new heights last Monday, including playing "Monkey in the Middle" with a soccer ball and Marshall and Jaxon!  It was honestly such a fun day.  After picking up groceries, we had some downtime at home during the afternoon.  Bridget worked at the farm that evening and I took Rachel and Gretchen for the last bit of it.  They all had a great time!  Once we were all home, we roasted smores out on the deck and had a great evening together.  Yay for summer!

Tuesday morning I went to yoga and loved that!  Rachel had dance from 11:00-12:45.  After getting her home and she and I grabbing a quick lunch, I took the girls to go see the new live action "Little Mermaid".  Bridget had already seen it for a friend's birthday two weeks before, but she insisted that all of us would love it, so I bought tickets and took all the girls.  Bridget was right, we all loved it!  And I stayed awake the entire time!  The Little Mermaid was my favorite cartoon movie for so many of my growing up years.  My grandparents lived in a condo with a pool and I spent hours in that pool pretending I was Ariel, so of course I loved this movie.  The girls all loved it too.  It was so fun watching Gretchen during a part with Max, the dog, as Prince Eric rescues him from the burning ship.  She was literally on the edge of her seat with her hands in her mouth.  And when Ariel changed back into a human so she could be with the prince Rachel reached over and gave Gretchen the biggest hug.  Ah, it was so fun to experience it with them.  And don't tell, but Bridget definitely has a crush on the actor who plays Eric.  Ah!  To be young!  Such a fun afternoon.  That evening I finally talked Marshall and Bridget into going on a bike ride with me, something I have been begging them to do all summer!  They finally agreed and off we went.  It was delightful.  However, when we were headed home, on the east side of Main Street, so it was all uphill, Bridget's gears started acting funny.  Marshall was ahead of us, so I stopped to help Bridget.  When we got going again, on the uphill, I didn't have great balance or momentum on my bike, it tipped over, I fell over, and sprained my ankle!  Ah!  Third summer in a row spraining that darn right ankle.  Geez.  I was able to walk my bike to a flatter part, and then ride it all the way home with the assist.  A lame end to a wonderful summer evening bike ride!  I spent the rest of the evening with my foot elevated, rotating ice on and off.  Richard was a saint and did all of bedtime, including reading a very long book to Gretchen.  :)

Wednesday morning Bridget cooked breakfast with me-German pancakes, the kids loved them.  I had a temple appointment that morning, so I hobbled through the parking lot to initiatory.  The kids faired well here at home without me.  Rachel had dance that afternoon and Marshall, Bridget, Gretchen and I went to the orthodontist!  Gretchen just got to sit and observe, lucky girl.  Marshall had a check-up and Bridget got braces on her top teeth!  She did such a good job.  It took about one hour, start to finish, and she did so well, especially considering her first experiences at the orthodontist back in 2018!  She has come a long way!  Once we were finally done, to celebrate we stopped at Chick-Fil-A and used a gift card to get shakes and frozen lemonades.  Later that afternoon Bridget had horseback riding and Marshall had his first soccer practice with his new team.  Richard was able to go straight from work to the team meeting at the end of practice as well, very helpful!  That night Bridget went to YW's, a kick-off for Girl's Camp, which she loved and then she went straight to her friend's YW/YM activity-night games at Freedom Hills Park.  Rachel was also invited to this same activity with a friend of hers.  So both girls were there and they had the time of their lives!  They haven't ever really played night games before and they loved it, especially Rachel.  They got home after 10:00 and told us all about it.  While the girls were off having fun, Marshall and I were having fun de-junking his room!  It actually was pretty fun and I enjoyed my time with that kid.  He is so sentimental that it is hard for him to get rid of things, but I just kept reminding him we are trying to transition his room from young boy to high school boy.  :)

Thursday morning Rachel had dance and then went straight to her piano lesson.  Bridget spent the morning at Lagoon with Avery.  It was a rainy morning and Bridget's mouth was in a fair amount of pain with her braces, but between Tylenol and keeping a warm rice bag on her mouth, she made it through her morning and still wanted to go to Lagoon.  She and Avery had a great time.  She was home with just enough time to eat some soft mac and cheese for lunch before leaving again to go see "Little Mermaid" for the third time with her friends!  I took the younger two girls to visit Mark Erickson in our ward.  Mark is a wonderful man in our ward with severe disabilities.  He helps with the music in primary, so our girls know him well.  He has a serious infection and will not be at church for quite some time.  We signed up to visit him on Thursday and it was so great.  My girls are used to seeing him in Sunday clothes in his fancy wheelchair, so to see him in pajamas, in a hospital type bed was a bit jarring for them, but they were so good to still talk to him.  It was a good experience for us all.  That evening Richard took Rachel on her summer date-dinner at Waffle Love and then a trip to Target, Rachel was in heaven.  :)  Bridget was home for less than 30 minutes after the movie and then begged me to take her back to Claire's where she spent the rest of the night...such a social butterfly!  If only we could get Marshall to live like this.  :)

Friday morning Rachel had dance again, so she was off early.  Several days ago, Gretchen declared that she wanted to do a cookie and lemonade stand.  She was so adamant about it, I decided I should commit to it and help her fulfill this dream.  We decided Friday would be the day, 1:00-3:00 pm.  She was also adamant that it would be free-no one could talk her into charging money!  She and I made snickerdoodles on Thursday night and chocolate chip cookies on Friday morning and I mixed up some lemonade.  Funny story, when Gretchen and I were baking Thursday night she begged me to let her crack the eggs.  I agreed, helped her with the first one, and then talked her through the second one.  Of course she got egg on her hand and she was SO disgusted!  She said, "I will never crack an egg again!  I will always have my children do it!"  The girls helped her make signs, and I posted it on the neighborhood Facebook page and texted it out.  We got it all set up and she was so excited.  She had a pretty good turnout!  There were obviously lots of kids who came by, but also several adults and she did make a $1 tip.  She was super shy with the adults, but loved when the kids came.  I went into Friday dreading it, but all in all, it was quite fun.  I just sat out there with my ankle up and read a book when people weren't there!  Rachel had Eily over as well, so the girls played in between customers and it was a great afternoon.  Bridget went to Cambria's at 1:30 and didn't get home until almost 11:00 pm!  This girl!  Cambria's mom did manicures for the girls and managed the farm with them, so it was a very full day for her!  Marshall had soccer practice that afternoon as well.  That night, once all the fun was done, Richard and I went to the temple for ward temple night and then enjoyed pie at the church afterward.  A great evening.

Saturday morning we had breakfast all together before Rachel had dance and Richard started working.  Richard is in the middle of working 12 straight days, so he spent the bulk of the weekend sequestered in our bedroom.  After lunch, the kids and I went to my parents' for the afternoon.  It was the best time.  Danny and Kevin were there with their families as well.  We feasted on delicious strawberry shortcake and just had a laid back afternoon together while the kids played.  It was dreamy.  Sadly, I did have to come home and make dinner, but I survived.  :)  The kids had planned a sleepover for that night, so they had fun playing together all evening and then they slept in the movie room.  The next morning we heard that Gretchen was crazy and they don't think they fell asleep until around 11:30 pm.  :)

We had a good Sunday.  Richard had to work again, but not until 10:30, and with no church meetings thanks to Father's Day we were able to have breakfast all together and tell Richard why we love him.  The primary kids sang in sacrament meeting and Rachel and Gretchen did great.  The kids and I had a relaxing afternoon while Richard worked, bless him.  I couldn't bring myself to get dinner going, but I finally made it!  The good thing about a late dinner is Richard was done working and he was able to eat with us.  :)  We enjoyed FHE around the kitchen table while we ate ice cream, a good end to the day.

Today I drove Bridget and Cambria to Fruitland where we met Becky.  Those girls are spending the entire week in Vernal and none of us were happy to see Bridget go.  As you can imagine, she could hardly wait to get out there, so it was hardly a sad good-bye for her as she hugged her siblings this morning.  It is definitely a different dynamic with her gone, but considering she was hardly home last week, this week will not be much different!  Becky has been so kind to already send me pictures and videos and I cannot wait to hear of all her adventures.  We will try to muddle through life here at home without her.

Thanks for reading!  We love each of you!

Richard, Jenny, Marshall, Bridget, Rachel and Gretchen :)

Dance pictures came in this week, so I have included them here.  Also, why is Marshall looking so old?!  :(
